About Sun Salutations

Sun salutations are a fun way to get kids flowing through different postures and is often used as a warm up exercise.
A sun salutation is a salute or “hello” to the sun, and I have two different versions that I use for different age groups.

For younger kids its as simple as this:

Hello Sun – stretch up high, wiggle fingers at the sun
Hello Earth – forward bend, tap ground with fingers
Hello Dog – Jump back to downward dog
Hello Caterpillar – knees, chest, chin to the floor
Hello snake – push forwards and up into cobra pose
Hello dog – push back to downward dog – shake tail, other side Hello earth – forward bend, tap ground with fingers
Hello sun – stretch up high, wiggle fingers at the sun.

For older kids there is an awesome poem thanks to ‘Storytime yoga’

Inhale – lifting arms up to the sky
Exhale – forward bend
Inhale – halfway up
Exhale – forward bend
Inhale – lunge right leg back
Exhale – left leg back d/dog
Inhale – knees to the floor
Exhale – chin, chest to floor
Inhale – into cobra
Exhale – d/dog
Inhale – left leg forward
Exhale – right leg forward
Inhale – halfway up
Exhale – forward bend
Inhale – Standing up straight
Exhale – Hands to heart centre
The Sun, the Sun…
I salute the Sun…
I open my heart…
to everyone…
The Sun rises…
and the Sun sets
The whole world…
in my heart rests…
again I arise…
ready to live…
happy to be…
and ready to give…
the Sun, The Sun…
I salute the Sun…
I open my heart…
to everyone…
